2019 NBA MOCK DRAFT
FIRST ROUND
1. NEW ORLEANS PELICANS
Zion Williamson-PF-Duke
6-7/285/Fr./18.8 | ||||||||
22.6 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 70.0% EFG
NBA Comparison: Larry Johnson/Maurice Stokes/Shaq like Impact
ROLE: Superstar Potential/Starter on a playoff team |
Zion is already a star to most people and has a chance to become a truly special player. He is the clear cut best player here as he has a NBA body already and has a very versatile game. He is a lot more than just a highlight reel dunk machine. He can create for himself and teammates and is a good rebounder as well. This is an easy pick for New Orleans.
2. MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES
Ja Morant-PG-Murray St.
6-3/175/So./19.7 | ||||||||
24.5 PPG, 10.0 APG, 5.7 RPG
NBA Comp: Derrick Rose (pre-injury)/Steve Francis
ROLE: Superstar Potential/Top 10 PG |
They just traded 13 year vet Mike Conley to the Jazz. Morant is the easy pick here to be the face of the franchise for the next decade. Like Zion, Morant is a South Carolina native and like Zion he is a highlight reel waiting to happen. He is also a great creator as evidenced by his assist numbers. He will need to do a lot in year one as the Grizzlies don't have a lot of talent right now.
3. NEW YORK KNICKS
RJ Barrett-G/F-Duke
6-7/202/Fr./18.8 | ||||||||
22.6 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 50.6% EFG
NBA Comp: Jalen Rose/Manu Ginobili
ROLE: #1 Scorer on a playoff team/All Star Potential |
The Knicks need a go to scorer and future star to lead them. Pairing Barrett with last year's first round pick Kevin Knox gives them a nice young duo to build around. Similar to last year's #3 Luka Doncic, Barrett has a chance to be the best player on his team from day one and should be a Rookie of the Year candidate. People forget that this Canadian slasher was the #1 player coming out of high school over Zion Williamson.
4. NEW ORLEANS PELICANS
DeAndre Hunter-Virginia-CF
6-7/225/So./21.4 | ||||||||
15.2 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 48.3% 3FG
NBA Comp: Thad Young/Shane Battier
ROLE: Starting SF/Defensive stopper, #3/4 scorer on a playoff team |
Memphis may try to trade this pick in hopes of landing a good veteran to surround the young cast of Zion Williamson, Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram.
If they keep the pick the smart move would be to draft Hunter as he gives them a player on the defensive end that they currently lack. He can guard the 2-4 and is also a great spot up 3 point shooter. With Zion and Lonzo commanding attention, he is sure to have many opportunities to hit open shots.The Pelicans were 24th in 3 point shooting and 27 in defense last year. Hunter can help improve both.
5. CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
Darius Garland-PG-Vanderbilt
6-2/175/Fr./19.2 | ||||||||
16.2 PPG, 2.6 APG 47.8% 3FG
NBA Comp: Kemba Walker/Jerryd Bayless
ROLE: High End Starting PG/Better Scorer than true point |
The Cavs are in full rebuild mode and it would not be a surprise if they try to trade Kevin Love for high pick if another team is willing to take on his salary. Even though they took a point guard last year in Collin Sexton, they should still draft the best player available as they need talent regardless of position. In today's NBA, two smaller guards can play together and the Cavs will be able to see if either of the young guards turns into a Kemba or Steph type of true star play making point guard.
6. PHOENIX SUNS
Coby White-UNC-PG
6-5/191/Fr./19.2 | ||||||||
16.1 PPG, 4.5 APG 35.2% 3FG
NBA Comp: Jamal Murray/Spencer Dinwiddie
ROLE: High End Starting PG |
With Devin Booker and last year's #1 overall pick DeAndre Ayton the Suns could potentially have the best shooting guard-center duo since Kobe and Shaq. TJ Warren and Josh Jackson provide solid role players at the forward spots but the Suns badly need a true point guard. White is the easy pick here with Garland off the board. White is a better passer than Garland at this point and also will have a great size advantage over most guards. The Suns could be fighting for a playoff spot if White hits.
7. CHICAGO BULLS
Jarrett Culver-SG-Texas Tech
6-7/194/So./20.2 | ||||||||
18.5 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 3.7 APG
NBA Comp: Jeremy Lamb/Michael Finley
ROLE: #2/3 Scorer on a playoff team/High End starting SG |
The Bulls look to be one of the biggest winners of the night as one of Garland, Culver, Hunter and White are guaranteed to fall to them at #7. The Bulls need offense at they were 27th in scoring last year and 29th in offensive rating. Culver can score and create. He went from good role player as a Freshman to breakout star last year. The Bulls are in a long term rebuild and Culver is the right prospect to help them contend in the coming years.
8. ATLANTA HAWKS
Jaxson Hayes-Texas-C
6-11/219/Fr./18.9 | ||||||||
10.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 2.2 BPG
NBA Comp: Nerlens Noel/Amir Johnson
ROLE: Starting Center/Elite Defender and Rim Protector. |
The Hawks have hit home runs the past two drafts taking point guard Trae Young in 2018 and power forward John Collins in 2017. They now look to take the next step in the rebuilding process. They have 3 picks in the top 17 and 6 overall. They will try to trade up or trade for an established vet.
If they keep the pick, it would not be a surprise if they took Hayes here. He is the type of defensive center to pair with Collins up front. Atlanta was dead last in total defense last year. Current centers Miles Plumlee and Alex Len are both average at best and they will both be free agents in 2020.
9. WASHINGTON WIZARDS
Cameron Reddish-SF-Duke
6-8/208/Fr./19.6 | ||||||||
13.5 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 45.9% EFG
NBA Comp: Khris Middleton/Rudy Gay
ROLE: Starting SF, #2/3 scorer on a playoff team |
The Wizards are in a good spot to draft the best player available and that player is clearly Reddish. He is a good not great scorer that has perfect size and length for a modern small forward. He was inconsistent at Duke but that was to be expected as he wasn't the best player always on the floor Current starting SF Trevor Ariza is Free Agent and will likely go to a contender. This would be a very smart move for Washington.
10. ATLANTA HAWKS
Nassir Little-UNC-SF
6-6/220/Fr./19.2 | ||||||||
9.8 PPG , 4.6 RPG, 50.5% EFG
NBA Comp: Jason Richarson/Harrison Barnes
ROLE: Star Potential/3 and D Starting Wing is floor |
Little is a strong wing that can eventually take over at SF for Kent Bazemore. Little has a lot of potential but will need a few years before he makes a major impact on the league. He already has a NBA body but he needs time to refine his game. With all of these picks the Hawks need to draft on upside and take some gambles.
11. MINNESOTA TIMEBERWOLVES
Sekou Doumbouya--PF-France
6-9/230/Int./18.3 | ||||||||
(French Pro A): 6.7 PPG , 54.9% EFG
NBA Comp: Serge Ibaka/Antonio Davis
ROLE: Starting PF/Role Playing Dirty Work Guy |
Minnesota took a step back after a good year in 2018. Karl Anthony Towns is a true #1 scorer but Andrew Wiggins has proven that he is nothing more than a solid piece. He isn't a true bust but they should not have given him an extension.
Now they are back in the lottery hoping to get a solid piece here. With Taj Gibson likely leaving and Gorgui Dieng as nothing more than a solid bench player, the TWolves need to find a new starter at power forward. Sekou is the youngest player in the draft but could end up being a major steal if he is given the proper time to develop. Minnesota goes with the upside pick here
12. CHARLOTTE HORNETS
Goga Bitadze-Rep. of Georgia-C
6-11/250/Int./19.7 | ||||||||
(Euro) 11.1 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 2.3 BPG
NBA Comp: Jusuf Nurkic/Nic Vucevic
ROLE: Starting Center/Good Shooter and Rim Protector. |
Will Kemba stay or will Kemba go? That is the main question of the Hornets 2019 offseason. The person they draft here will be just a footnote if Mr. Walker leaves. If he does indeed leave, they may be looking at a long term rebuild and they will likely try to trade Nic Batum and Cody Zeller as well. Goga is both the best player on the board and fills a long term need at center as Zeller and Bismack Biyombo are not in the long term plans.
13. MIAMI HEAT
PJ Washington-PF-UK
6-8/228/So./20.7 | ||||||||
15.2 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 56.7% EFG
NBA Comp: Taj Gibson/Brandon Bass
ROLE: Low End Starting PF/Elite Rebounder and Good scorer |
The Heat seem to always draft tough players that fit with the Pat Riley school of defense, hard work and team play. Washington fits that mold here and we all know Riley is never shy about showing love to Kentucky players.
14. BOSTON CELTICS
Brandon Clarke-Gonzaga-PF
6-8/207/Jr./22.6 | ||||||||
16.9 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 3.1 BPG
NBA Comp: John Henson/Tyrus Thomas
ROLE: Low End Starting PF/Elite Defender and Rim Protector |
It is no secret that Brad Stevens loves defense and Clarke is the best shot blocker in this class. Clarke is also excellent at switching onto guards which is especially important in today's NBA. The Celtics are in a bind as they are a lot more concerned about free agency but they have 3 picks in the first round so they need to get some solid role players to biuild around Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Clarke is a smart pick here.
15. DETROIT PISTONS
Nickeil Alexander Walker-SG-Virginia Tech
6-6/204/So./20.7 | ||||||||
16.2 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 4.0 APG
NBA Comp: Josh Richardson/Larry Hughes
ROLE: Starting SG, #4/5 option/Elite Passing Wing |
The Pistons have a pretty specific need as they need a complimentary scoring wing. Alexander Walker is the best fit for Blake Griffin and company to take this team to the next level.
16. ORLANDO MAGIC
Kevin Porter-USC-G/F
6-5/213/Fr./19.0 | ||||||||
9.5 PPG , 4.0 RPG, 56.1% EFG
NBA Comp: JR Smith/Fred Jones
ROLE: Starting SG, #4/5 option, good slashing wing |
The Magic stay with the trend of drafting upside, length and athleticism. The past two drafts they have taken Mo Bamba and Jonathan Issac. They clearly value guys like this and have faith in their coaching that they can develop guys. Porter fits this mold and can eventually become a good slashing wing to play along with those guys.
17. ATLANTA HAWKS
Bol Bol-Oregon-C
7-3/208/Fr./19.5 | ||||||||
21.1 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 2.1 BPG
NBA Comp: Rick Smits/Salah Mejri
ROLE: Boom/Bust prospect, Starting Big with a great offensive skill set |
Someone will take a chance on Bol. One would figure it would be a team with multiple picks that can afford to take the biggest risk. Bol has freakish size and a great shot. He is a true stretch five but the questions will remain on if his slight body can handle the grind of a NBA season. He already had injury issues in his only year of college.
18. INDIANA PACERS
Rui Hachimura-Gonzaga-CF
6-8/230/Jr./21.2 | ||||||||
19.7 PPG , 6.5 RPG, 60.8% EFG
NBA Comp: Lamar Odom/Marcus Morris |
The Pacers get a versatile role player that is ready to contribute from day one. Hachimura may lack upside but he can provide minutes to a team that may be losing several key players to free agency.
19. SAN ANTONIO SPURS
Tyler Herro-SG-UK
6-5/195/Fr./19.3 | ||||||||
14.0 PPG, 4.55 RPG, 35.5 % 3FG
NBA Comp: Joe Harris/Rex Champman
ROLE: Sharpshooting starting SG, #4/5 option |
The Spurs get the sharpshooter that can learn a lot from veteran Marco Belinelli. Herro can be brought along slowly with the Spurs great system for developing players.
20. BOSTON CELTICS
Keldon Johnson-G/F-UK
6-6/211/Fr./19.6 | ||||||||
13.5 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 38.1% 3FG
NBA Comp: Corey Maggette/Wes Matthews
ROLE: Starting SG, #3/4 option |
Johnson's defense and hustle give him the slight nod here over Romeo Langford. Both players have great size for a wing in today's NBA.
21. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
Cameron Johnson-UNC-CF
6-9/210/Sr./23.2 | ||||||||
16.9 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 62.0% EFG
NBA Comp: John Salmons/Darius Miller
ROLE: Sharpshooting starting SF, #4/5 option |
Johnson is an excellent shooter to play alongside Russell Westbrook and Paul George. At 6-9 he can play both forward spots if he adds a few pounds.
22. BOSTON CELTICS
Luka Samanic-PF-Croatia
6-11/227/Int./19.4 | ||||||||
(Liga ABA): 7.9 PPG , 33.9% 3 PT
NBA Comp: Nikola Mirotic/Vlad Radmanovic
ROLE: Sharpshooting Forward, Ideal Bench Player |
One has to figure that one of Boston's 3 first rounders will be a Euro Stash pick in hopes of creating more cap room. Samanic has great size and a nice shooting stroke.
23. MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES (Utah Mike Conley trade)
Romeo Langford-Indiana-G/F
6-6/215/Fr./19.6 | ||||||||
16.5 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 49.1% EFG
NBA Comp: Quentin Richardson/Dion Waiters
ROLE: Starting Wing, #3/4 option, good wing rebounder |
This pick could be the biggest steal when we look back in 3-5 years. Many feel if Langford stayed another year, he had a chance to become a top 10 pick in 2020. He is a great isolation scorer that is very strong for his age. Memphis could have its backcourt of the future with Morant and Langford
24. PHILADELPHIA 76ERS
Matisse Thybulle-Washington-SG
6-5/200/Sr./22.2 | ||||||||
9.1 PPG, 3.5 SPG, 50.0 EFG
NBA Comp: Bruce Bowen/Raja Bell
ROLE: Defensive stopper, All-Defensive Potential |
Philly needs a lock down wing defender after trading Robert Covington as part of the JImmy Butler trade. We will see if they are able to retain Butler and JJ Redick in free agency. If boht leave, Thybulle will have an opportunity for major minutes as a rookie.
25. PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS
Chuma Okeke-PF-Auburn
6-8/230/So./20.7 | ||||||||
12.0 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 57.7% EFG
NBA Comp: Tim Thomas/Ryan Anderson
ROLE: Sharpshooting Forward, Ideal Bench Player |
With both Al-Farouq Aminu and Rodney Hood hitting free agency, Portland would be wise to invest in a young forward that can stretch the floor and add some toughness.
26. CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
Nicolas Claxton-UGA-F/C
|
The Cavs add the very long big man that will be an eventually successor to Tristan Thompson.
27. BROOKLYN NETS
Grant Williams-TENN-PF
6-7/236/Jr./20.5 | ||||||||
18.8 PPG , 7.5 RPG, 58.2% EFG
NBA Comp: Larry Nance Jr/Trevor Booker
ROLE: Backup PF/Role Playing Scorer and Dirty Work Guy |
Williams is versatile forward that can mesh with Kyrie Irving or any other big name free agent that the Nets bring in this summer.
28. GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
Luguentz Dort-Arizona St-CG
6-4/222/Fr./20.1 | ||||||||
16.1 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 46.7 % 3FG
NBA Comp: Marcus Smart/PJ Hairston
ROLE: Defensive stopper, Solid Combo Guard |
Dort is a player that has his stock rising after many good workouts. His main weakness has been his decision making but that could easily change playing along in the Warriors elite ball movement system. They need an eventual replacement for Shaun Livingston.
29. SAN ANTONIO SPURS
Bruno Fernando-C-Maryland
6-10/237/So./20.8 | ||||||||
13.6 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 1.9 BPG
NBA Comp: Enes Knater/Steven Adams
ROLE: Role playing starting Center, upside to become a #3/4 scoring option |
Fernando doesn't fit all systems but his offensive skill set would be ideal in a place like San Antonio. Similar to Dort, the best thing that can happen to him is to go to a winning system with great coaching.
30. MILWAUKEE BUCKS
Mfiondu Kabengele-FSU-C
6-11/256/So./21.8 | ||||||||
13.2 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.5 BPG
NBA Comp: Nene Hilario/Andray Blatche
ROLE: Physical Big Man/Good Bench Player |
The Bucks go with the best player on the board and get the powerful big that can block shots and has solid offensive potential.
