MY NFL TOP 100 PLAYERS LIST: 6-10

My #6-10 features only one offensive player.  That offensive player is the best WR in the league.   This list includes the two best defenders in the league, both only in their second year and two great veterans that are Pro Bowlers nearly every season.

6. JJ WATT-HOUSTON TEXANS-DE/PR #1

Watt was a monster in 2012. In only his second year in the league, he is led the league in sacks with 20.5.  He also had an amazing 16 passes deflected earning him the nickname "JJ Swat."  It is scary to think that Watt is only going to get better.

7. CALVIN JOHNSON-DETROIT LIONS-WR #1

"MEGATRON"  followed up his insane 2011 with an even better 2012.  He improved his catch total by 24 and his yardage total by 283.  The only thing that went down were his TD numbers. He only had 5 after getting in the endzone a remarkable 16 times the previous season.  Johnson's struggles in the redzone had more to do with constant double and triple teams along with inconsistent play from QB Matthew Stafford.

8. VON MILLER-DENVER BRONCOS-OLB/SLB/PR #2

Watt wasn't the only 2nd year player that had a MONSTER season in 2012.  Miller finished 3rd in the NFL in sacks AND 3rd in the league in forced fumbles.  If you look up defensive playmaker in the dictionary you may find Miller's picture.  The Broncos use him in a variety of ways, not just as a one dimensional pass rusher (this is not a shot at Aldon Smith).  The only defender in the league I would take over Miller is Watt.  Cam Newton is solid and may one day be a complete QB, but I bet right now the Panthers have to be kicking themselves over passing on both Miller and Watt with the #1 pick in 2011.

9. JUSTIN SMITH-SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS-DE/DT #1

Even though Smith technically is a defensive end, I have him listed as my top defensive tackle because he fills the role of a space eating INTERIOR defensive lineman that can also rush the passer at times.  He lines up as a 5 technique DE in the 49ers 3-4 and lines up as a 3 technique DT when they go to their 4-2 nickel package.  He demands double teams on nearly every play that lets his teammates roam free.  Smith is the most important player on the 49ers defense.  He helped Aldon Smith finish second in the league in sacks and helped NaVorro Bowman finish second in the league in tackles.  When Smith was injured in week 16, the Seahawks beat the 49ers 42-13 and had 346 yards on the San Fran defense that was 3rd in the league in total defense. When Smith is 100%, the San Fran D is best in the NFL.

10. DeMARCUS WARE-DALLAS COWBOYS-OLB/PR #3

Last year Ware was the top defender on my list and finished #5 overall.  This year he slipped four spots on my list.  He is still one of the best pass rushers in the NFL (past or present).  You know a guy is GREAT when an 11.5 sack season is a down year.  Despite going from 19.5 sacks in 2011 to 11.5 last year, Ware still made his presence felt in other ways.  He had 5 forced fumbles and 56 total tackles.  I expect to get another 15+ sack season in 2013.
