2023 NBA FREE AGENCY RANKINGS and LISTS
This year’s free agent class is not as top heavy as year’s past but it is very deep. Only a few teams are under the salary cap. The Houston Rockets, Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs are the only teams that can afford one max guy or multiple starters. Other teams with cap space more than the Mid-Level Exception include the Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings, Oklahoma City Thunder and Orlando Magic. Most other teams will spend their time, efforts and money on retaining their own free agents.
FRIDAY MORNING JUNE 30th UPDATES:
- James Harden opted into the final year of his $35,640,000 contract. The 76ers are looking to trade him.
- Nikola Vučević signed a 3-year $60,000,000 extension.
- Harrison Barnes signed a 3-year $54,000,000 extension.
- Jordan Clarkson opted into the final year of his $14,260,000 contract.
- Josh Hart opted into the final year of his $12,960,000 contract.
Here is my list by tiers:
Tier 1: Stars that are #1/2 options on playoff
teams
All are seeking SUPERMAX, MAX or NEAR MAX
Contracts
1. JAMES
HARDEN-SG-PHILADELPHIA 76ERS
6'5''/222
AGE: 34 in August
Awards: 2018 NBA MVP, 7x All NBA, 10x All Star, 3x
Scoring Champion
STATS: 21.0 PTS 10.7
AST 6.1 REB 38.5%-3PT 86.7%-FT
Market Value: Eligible for Superstar Max Deal with 10+ years
of service 35% of the cap but likely to sign for less or could still opt in to $35,640,000 contract.
Harden still fills up the stat sheet and is an
All-Star level player when healthy. The former MVP played well in Philly and is
a nice player next to Joel Embiid. The rumors are that he could go back to
Houston, but at 34 does he really want to be a part of a rebuild? The most
logical option is a return to Philly but anything can happen.
2. KYRIE IRVING-PG-DALLAS MAVERICKS
6'2''/195
AGE: 31
Awards: 3x All NBA, 8x All Star, 1x NBA Champion
STATS: 27.1 PTS 5.1
REB 5.5 AST 37.9%-3PT 90.5%-FT
Market Value:
Eligible for Superstar Max Deal with 10+ years
of service 35% of the cap but likely to sign for less
Kyrie can score as well as any guard in the league when he is healthy. Like
Harden, he found his fit in Dallas as a great second option next to a
superstar. Dallas gave up a lot of assets to get him and made draft day trades
and picks based on a roster centered around him and Luka.
3. FRED VANVLEET-PG-TORONTO RAPTORS
6'1''/190
AGE: 29
Awards: 1x All Star, 1x NBA Champion
STATS: 19.3 PTS 4.1
REB 7.2 AST 89.8%-FT
Market Value: Top ten point guard. Over $30 million per year
VanVleet may be looking for a change of scenery after playing
his entire career in Toronto. He can create, score and defend. He could be the
veteran leader that the Spurs, Rockets or Jazz are looking for. He could also
stay in Toronto or join a veteran team via a sign and trade.
4. KHRIS MIDDLETON-SF/SG-MILWAUKEE BUCKS
6'8''/216
AGE: 32 in August
Awards: 3x All Star, 1x NBA Champion
STATS (From 21-22): 18.6 PTS
5.4 REB 5.1 AST
Market Value: Veteran Scoring Wing:
DeMar DeRozan: 3 years/$81.9 (27.3 AAV)
CJ McCollum: 2 years/64.0 (32.0 AAV)
Middleton was injured last year, but is a great scoring wing
when healthy. He is the perfect player to play alongside Giannis and Jrue
Holiday in Milwaukee so they will do their best to retain him. Given his age
and injury risk, he will likely sign a deal no longer than 3 years.
Tier 2: High End Starters
All of these players would start on any team.
These players are all veterans with at least six years of experience and all
have been contributors in the playoffs.
5. NIKOLA VUČEVIĆ-C/PF-CHICAGO BULLS
6'11''/260
AGE: 32
Awards: 2x All Star
STATS: 17.6 PTS 11.0
REB 3.2 AST
Market Value: Veteran High End Starting Center
Myles Turner; 2 years/$40.9 ($20.45 AAV)
Jonas Valančiūnas: 2 years/$30.13 ($15.06
AAV)
Vučević played and started in every game last season. He is probably the most
dependable big man in the league not named Nikola Jokić, Joel Embiid or Bam
Adebayo. He may not be as good on offense as Karl Anthony Towns or Kristaps
Porziņģis or a shot blocker like Rudy Gobert. He is among the best rebounders
in the league and can pass well for a big. The Bulls should retain him as the
only teams that have cap space are either rebuilding or already have a big man.
6. KYLE KUZMA-CF-WASHINGTON WIZARDS
6'9''/222
AGE: 28 in July
Accolades: 1x NBA Champion
STATS: 21.2 PTS 7.2
REB 3.7 AST
Market Value: Starting Wing Second/Third Option
Andrew Wiggins: 4 years/$109 (27.25 AAV)
Mikal Bridges: 4 years/$90.9 (22.75 AAV)
Kuzma opted out of his $13 million player option and may even get an annual
contract that doubles that. He can score and rebound at a high level. He is big
enough to play either forward spot and is a very versatile player. He would be
an ideal fit on the Kings or Pacers who both have cap space and could use an
upgrade in the frontcourt.
7. JERAMI GRANT-CF-PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS
6'8''/215
AGE: 29
STATS: 20.5 PTS 4.5
REB 2.4 AST 40.1%-3PT
Market Value: Starting Wing Second/Third Option
Andrew Wiggins: 4 years/$109 (27.25 AAV)
Mikal Bridges: 4 years/$90.9 (22.75 AAV)
Grant should have the same market value at
Kuzma but has a slightly different skill set as a 3 and D player. He has proven
himself as a scorer the past few seasons. Ideally, he is a third option on a
playoff team. Portland wants to keep him, but other teams including the
Pistons, Mavs, Raptors and Pacers will keep tabs on him if he is not signed on
day one of free agency.
8. DRAYMOND GREEN-PF-GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
6'7''/236
AGE: 33
Awards: 2x All NBA, 4x All Star, 4x NBA Champion, 8x
All Defense
STATS: 8.5 PTS 7.2 REB 6.8 AST 1.0
STL
Market Value: No player like Draymond so in between $12.5
and $20 AAV
Green is more valuable to the Warriors than
any other team in the league. The Warriors moves to get Chris Paul and trade
away Jordan Poole also signal their desire to keep Green on the team. He has
been the backbone of the Warriors championships and his versatility cannot be
replaced by any one player. The Warriors are over the luxury tax so it will be
very interesting to see what the offer him from a financial standpoint.
9. BROOK LOPEZ-C-MILWAUKEE BUCKS
7'0''/280
AGE: 35
Awards: 1x All Star, 1x NBA Champion, 2x All Defense
STATS: 15.9 PTS 6.7
REB 2.5 BLK
Market Value: Veteran Starting Center
Myles Turner: 2 years/$40.9 ($20.4 AAV)
Steven Adams: 2 years/$25.2 ($12.6 AAV)
Lopez has aged like fine wine and turned in
his best statistical season since the 16-17 season. Many teams will covet the
big man but he will not find a better situation from a basketball standpoint
than what he has in Milwaukee. The only way he leaves is if a team like the
Rockets pays him more than his current market value.
10. D'ANGELO RUSSELL-PG-LOS ANGELES LAKERS
6'5''/193
AGE: 27
Awards: 1x All Star
STATS: 17.8 PTS 6.2
AST 3.0 REB 39.6%-3PT
Market Value: Combo Guard 3rd/4th
Option
Malcolm Brogdon: 2 years/$45 (22.5 AAV)
Spencer Dinwiddie: 3 years/$54 (18.0 AAV)
Russell played well down the stretch for the
Lakers and was good in every series before a bad showing in the conference
final against Denver. He can score, create and has become a reliable
three-point shooter. He still is only 27 years old, so a young team with cap
space like the Spurs, Rockets, Wizards or Pistons could be interested in him.
He could stay with the Lakers or be an option for the Raptors or Jazz if they
move on from VanVleet and Clarkson respectively.
11. JORDAN CLARKSON-CG-UTAH JAZZ
6'5''/190
AGE: 31
Awards: 2021 6th Man Award
STATS: 20.8 PTS 4.0
REB 4.4 AST
Market Value: Combo Guard 3rd/4th
Option
Malcolm Brogdon: 2 years/$45 (22.5 AAV)
Spencer Dinwiddie: 3 years/$54 (18.0 AAV)
Clarkson is a bucket getter that can also
create and rebound well. Though he has played well in Utah, it may be time for
him to leave as they are in a rebuild. He started 61 games last year after
being their 6th man the previous three seasons. Clarkson is at a
career crossroads and only he knows if he is content to stay in Utah or looking
to play deep into the playoffs.
12. JAKOB POELTL-C-TORONTO RAPTORS
7'1''/245
AGE: 27
STATS: 12.5 PTS 9.1
REB 2.7 AST 1.2 BLK
Market Value: Young Starting Center
Clint Capela: 5 years/$90.0 ($18.0 AAV)
Mitchell Robinson: 4 years/$60.0 ($15.0 AAV)
Poeltl does not have the playoff experience of the other players here but he
can be very valuable to any playoff team given his skill set. He is an
excellent rebounder, good shot blocker and a great passer for a big man. He is
a horrible free throw shooter and is smart enough not to take threes. Poeltl
would be a nice consolation prize for a team that missed out on Vučević or
Lopez.
13. RUSSELL WESTBROOK-PG-LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS
6'4''/200
AGE: 34
Awards: 2016 NBA MVP, 9x All NBA, 9x All Star
STATS: 15.9 PTS 5.8
REB 7.5 AST
Market Value: Full Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception of $12.4
million
Westbrook can still help a contender with his
insane energy, athletic ability and versatility. All of his shooting
percentages went up after his trade to the Clippers. He can only return to the
Clippers on the vet minimum. The LA native has already made a ton of money in
his career so he may stay to make his life easier. Chicago and Minnesota are
borderline playoff teams that need a starting point guard and have the Full Non-Taxpayer
Mid Level Exception of $12.4 million.
14. HARRISON BARNES-CF-SACRAMENTO KINGS
6'8''/240
AGE: 31
Accolades: 1x NBA Champion
STATS: 15.0 PTS 4.5
REB 37.4%-3PT 84.7%-FT
Market Value: Full Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception of $12.4
million
You can call Barnes Mr. Consistency. He was
one of only three players in the league, along with Vučević and Mikal Bridges
to play and start every game last season. He is among the most efficient
players in the league and has the versatility to play either forward spot.
Ideally, he is a 4th/5th option on a contender but has
shown to be a capable 3rd option if need be. Barnes has played his
entire career in the Western Conference, however he could move for the right
price. Both Indiana and Detroit have cap space and a need at forward.
15. BRUCE BROWN-G/F-DENVER NUGGETS
6'4''/202
AGE: 27 in August
Accolades: 1x NBA Champion
STATS: 11.5 PTS 4.1
REB 3.4 AST 1.1 STL
Market Value: Versatile 4th Option
Malcolm Brogdon: 2 years/$45.0 (22.5 AAV)
Luguentz Dort: 5 years/$82.5 (16.5 AAV)
No player helped themselves more in the
playoffs than Brown. After not getting a long-term deal last summer, Brown took
a lesser deal to play for a contender and won a title while helping his market
value. He would start on almost every team in the league. He can guard any
position other than center. On offense, he is a great playmaker and is an
efficient scorer that could fit on any contender.
Tier 3: Young Restricted Free Agents
All are seeking contracts over 15-20 million
per year but since they are restricted free agents, they are likely to stay
with their current team. The current team can match any offer made to them.
16. CAMERON JOHNSON-CF-BROOKLYN NETS
6'8''/215
AGE: 27
STATS: 15.5 PTS 4.4
REB 40.4%-3PT 84.2%-FT
Market Value: 3 and D Sharpshooter
De'Andre Hunter 4 years/$90.0 (22.5 AAV)
Norman Powell: 5 years/$90.0 (18.0 AAV)
If I’m Cameron Johnson’s agent I’m using
Hunter’s contract as my starting point. Johnson has nearly identical numbers to
Hunter and provides the same skill set. He may go for less annually if he gets
a longer term deal.
17. AUSTIN REAVES-SG-LOS ANGELES LAKERS
6'5''/205
AGE: 25
STATS: 13.5 PTS 3.0

Market Value: Sharpshooting Guard
Joe Harris: 4 years/$75.0 (18.75 AAV)
Kevin Huerter: 4 years/$65.0 (16.25 AAV)
Reaves has a great story going from undrafted
to two-way contract to solid bench player to breakout starter this season. His
story and ascension are similar to Duncan Robinson and Joe Harris, both guys
cashed in big but are now seen as overpaid. Is a team willing to overpay Reaves
or will he only get the fair market
value Huerter deal.
18. PJ WASHINGTON-CF-CHARLOTTE HORNETS
6'8''/230
AGE: 25 in August
STATS: 15.7 PTS 4.9

Market Value: Young Power Forward 3rd/4th option
Aaron Gordon: 4 years/$86.64 (21.66 AAV)
Brandon Clarke: 4 years/$50.0 (12.5 AAV)
Washington had a breakout season just in time
for free agency. The old school big man is great in the post and took another
step as a scorer last season. He is a versatile defender that is a very good
athlete. His variance for his market value is very wide. He is under the radar
but could end up getting a massive deal or may settle for something around the
MLE.
19. GRANT WILLIAMS-CF-BOSTON CELTICS
6'7''/240
AGE: 24
STATS: 8.1 PTS 4.6

Market Value: 3 and D 6th Man/5th Starter
Dorian Finney-Smith: 4 years/$55.6 (13.89 AAV)
Royce O'Neale: 4 years/$36.0 (9.0 AAV)
Williams has stated that he wants to stay in
Boston. He is the perfect 3 and D player to come off the bench. The Celtics
have a lot of bodies in the frontcourt and that may result in Williams’
departure. He is a Charlotte native and a return to the Queen City could be
mutually beneficial to both sides. His skill set would be perfect to pair with
number 2 pick Brandon Miller.
20. RUI HACHIMURA-PF-LOS ANGELES LAKERS
6'8''/230
AGE: 25
STATS: 11.2 PTS 4.5
REB
Market Value: Young Power Forward 6th Man/5th Starter
Brandon Clarke: 4 years/$50.0 (12.5 AAV)
Rui played very well in the playoff for the
Lakers, especially against the Nuggets. He is a poor man’s Kyle Kuzma on most
nights. He can get you easy buckets and is a decent rebounder. He is not a
great defender and has been inconsistent. His market value is pretty much set
at around the Mid-Level, but some team might pay more in order to make the
Lakers match.
Tier 4: Young Role Players
Market Value:
All looking for a contract around the Non-Taxpayer
Mid-Level Exception of $12.4 Million.
21. JOSH HART-SG-NEW

Hart is among the toughest players in the
entire NBA. His presence was felt in New York as soon as he was traded from
Portland. He is the best rebounder in the NBA for players under 6’7” and is a
solid playmaker. He was great teaming up with former college teammate Jalen
Brunson. The Knicks need to do everything they can to keep him in New York.

Wood can score and hit threes while also
providing value as a rim protector. His stats and minutes took a dip in Dallas
last year. He should be looking for an opportunity to play more minutes.
Charlotte and Washington would be ideal fits and they both need a starting
center.
23. CARIS LEVERT-SG/SF-CLEVELAND
CAVALIERS
6'7''/200
AGE: 28
STATS: 12.1 PTS 3.8
REB 3.9 AST 39.2%-3PT
LeVert is a very versatile player that can do
bit of everything on offense. He has enough size to play small forward and
started there at times last year in Cleveland. Many teams could use his skill
set but he is most valuable on the Cavs. They traded a pick to get him and will
do what they can to keep him.
24. DILLON BROOKS-SG/SF-MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES
6'6''/220
AGE: 27
STATS: 14.3 PTS 3.3
REB 2.6 AST
Memphis has stated that they do not plan to keep Brooks. He can be a headache
with his antics and the Grizzlies want to get a little older and more mature.
At his best, Brooks is a strong wing that can score, rebound and defend. The
Rockets have been linked to him and he would add an edge to a team that has
lacked physicality.
25. MAX STUS-SG/SF-MIAMI HEAT
6'4''/203
AGE: 27
STATS: 11.5 PTS 3.2
REB 2.1 AST 35.0%-3PT
Strus is a good shooter and solid all-around
contributor. He did not have a good performance in the finals but he did very
well in the other rounds of the playoffs. The Heat are above the luxury tax and
may be forced to let Strus walk. The Chicago native has been linked to his
hometown Bulls and also to the Pacers.
26. DONTE DIVINCENZO-SG-GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS

DiVincenzo has not found the role he has been
looking for since the Bucks traded him in 2022. He is great athlete that is a
versatile player that knows how to win. He was in crowded backcourt on the
Warriors and didn’t fit there. Plenty of teams will have interest in him after
the second wave on free agency.
27. KELLY OUBRE-SF-CHARLOTTE HORNETS
6'7''/203
AGE: 27
STATS: 20.3 PTS 5.2
REB
Oubre had his best season as a scorer this
past year in Charlotte. He is a great athlete with great length. However, he's an inefficient scorer that puts up good stats on bad teams. He
didn’t mesh in his one opportunity to play on a contender with the Warriors.
His value is up in the air, and he has many question marks. Will Charlotte bring
him back? Can he play on a contender? Is he even a starter on most teams? He is
still only 27 so he still has a chance to improve.
28. LONNIE WALKER-G/F- LOS ANGELES LAKERS
6'4''/204
AGE: 24
STATS: 11.7 PTS 1.9 REB 36.5%-3PT
Walker was expected to do what Reaves did this year for the Lakers. However,
things did not go as planned for the young wing. He played well against the
Warriors but like most of the team he struggled against the Nuggets.
29. MALIK BEASLEY-SG- LOS ANGELES LAKERS
6'4''/187
AGE: 24
STATS: 12.7 PTS 3.5 REB 35.7%-3PT
The Lakers are likely to decline Beasley’s $16.5
million team option as they want to use that money to keep Austin Reaves or if
they lose Reaves, they can use that money to get a replacement level shooting
guard. Beasley was squeezed out of the rotation for the playoffs so it is hard
to see how the team values him. He is a borderline starter on most teams that
can score and defend.
30. MASON PLUMLEE-C-LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS

Plumlee is not young, but he still a valuable role player that could command
