2022 NBA DRAFT Positional Breakdown: GUARDS

This year’s crop of playmaking guards may lack the star power of classes in the past, but they make up for it with very good depth. There is a very good mix of scorers and playmakers. This class is very young as most of the top prospects are under age 21.

FIRST ROUND LOCKS:

TyTy Washington-PG-Kentucky
6'4''/196/6'8''
12.5 PTS      3.5 REB        3.9 AST            Fr./20.6
Hometown: Phoenix
NBA Comparison: Jarrett Jack/Andre Miller
ROLE: Solid Starting Point Guard
BEST TOOLS: Playmaking/IQ/Shooting

Washington is a big guard that is a good passer and a solid scorer. He is an old school point guard that relies on his fundamentals and skill set more than athleticism. He has very nice size and is probably the only guy in this draft that a coach would feel comfortable starting as a rookie.

Jaden Hardy-SG-G League Ignite
6'4''/190/6'9''
17.7 PTS      4.6 REB        3.2 AST        1.3 STL
GL./20.6
Hometown: Detroit
NBA Comparison: Monta Ellis/Larry Hughes
ROLE: Instant offense bench player, Average Starting Shooting Guard
BEST TOOLS: Scoring/First Step/Playmaking

Hardy is a volume scorer that can become a good scorer in the NBA if he improves his long-range shooting. He was the best scorer on the G-League Ignite team that included other first round picks Dyson Daniels and MarJon Beauchamp. He has a very nice blend of skills for a young prospect.

Blake Wesley-CG-Notre Dame
6'4''/187/6'9.25"
14.4 PTS      3.7 REB        2.4 AST
Fr./19.3
Hometown: South Bend, IN
NBA Comparison: Derrick White/E'Twaun Moore
ROLE: Instant offense bench player, Good 6th/7th man
BEST TOOLS: Playmaking/IQ/First Step

Wesley profiles as a good combo guard that can be the scorer in a second unit. He brings a lot of energy and seems like a very good team player. We saw how important Derrick White was for the Celtics this postseason. Hopefully, Wesley can eventually have that type of impact on a contender.

Kennedy Chandler-PG-Tennessee
6'0''/173/6'5.25''
13.9 PTS     4.7 AST        2.2 STL                     Fr./19.8
Hometown: Memphis
NBA Comparison: Shane Larkin/Speedy Claxton
ROLE: Starting Point Guard or high-end bench player
BEST TOOLS: Playmaking/Defense/Hustle

Chandler was arguably the best athlete at the Combine as he posted the top vertical jump at 41.5 inches, finished second in the shuttle run and fifth in the lane agility drill. He is a good playmaker that can eventually become a starting point guard but given his lack of size may be destined to be a high-end backup similar to Larkin and Claxton.

FIRST ROUND BORDERLINE:

Bryce McGowens-SG-Nebraska
6'7''/181/6'8.75''
16.8 PTS      5.2 REB        1.4 AST
Fr./19.6
Hometown: Pendleton, SC
NBA Comparison: Chris Douglas-Roberts/Kerry Kittles
ROLE: Instant offense bench player, Good 6th/7th man
BEST TOOLS: Scoring/First Step/Toughness

McGowens is a slender bucker getter that can be a very good role player. He knows how to get to the rim and finish with contact. He is not a great defender or passer and given his lack of size cannot be expected to play small forward.

Max Christie-SG-Michigan St.

6'6''/189/6'8.75''
9.3 PTS        3.5 REB        82.4%-FT
Fr./19.4
Hometown: Arlington Heights, IL
NBA Comparison: Kelly Oubre/Jeremy Lamb
ROLE: Backup Shooting Guard with starting potential
BEST TOOLS: Versatility/Athleticism/Shooting

Christie was a highly touted high school player that did not produce very high numbers in his one year at Michigan St. He has a very nice shooting stroke and shot the ball well from the charity stripe. However, he struggled shooting from three and given his lack of size may have trouble creating his own shot in the league. He has nearly identical size and athleticism to both Oubre and Lamb. Like those guys, he is destined to be a starter on a bad team or a very good backup.

Trevor Keels-CG-Duke
6'5''/224/6'7.25''
11.5 PTS      3.4 REB        2.7 AST        1.2 STL
Fr./18.8
Hometown: Clinton, MD
NBA Comparison: Dion Waiters/Isaiah Whitehead
ROLE: Backup Shooting Guard
BEST TOOLS: Physical Guard/Playmaking/IQ

Keels surprised some people by staying in the draft after not testing well athletically at the combine. At Duke he was not asked to be the offensive facilitator, but he has very good playmaking skills. He is a big and physical guard that is built more like a NFL linebacker than a NBA guard.

Ryan Rollins-SG-Toledo
6'3''/179/6'9.75''
18.9 PTS      6.0 REB        3.6 AST        1.7 STL
So./20.0
Hometown: Macomb, MI
NBA Comparison: Gary Payton II/Norris Cole
ROLE: High Level Bench Player
BEST TOOLS: Playmaking/Mid-Range Shooting/Length

Rollins is a small school stud that has a nice combination of skills that translates to the league. He is very similar in size and athletic ability to GP II and has similar quickness and small school pedigree as Cole. Both of those guys won NBA titles and the team that drafts Rollins will hope he can have that type of impact on winning.

Jean Montero-CG-Overtime Elite
6'2''/173/6'5.25''
OT/18.9
Hometown: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
NBA Comparison: Dennis Schröder/Jordan Farmar
ROLE: Backup Guard
BEST TOOLS: Playmaking/First Step/Speed

Montero is one of the quickest players in the class and can get anywhere he wants to on the court. He is not a true point guard but has the skill set to play both guard spots. He will need to work on his jump shot and get physically stronger in order to stick in the league.

Hugo Besson-France-CG
6'6''/180/6'5.5''
13.9 PTS      4.0 REB        2.3 AST
INT./21.2
Hometown: Angers, France
NBA Comparison:  Rudy Fernández/Smush Parker
ROLE: Backup Combo Guard
BEST TOOLS: Playmaking/Height for a Guard

Besson is a flashy guard that can have an impact on the game in a lot of ways. He is a defensive liability right now, but he showed a lot of toughness at the combine.

Andrew Nembhard-PG-Gonzaga

6'5''/196/6'5.75''
11.8 PTS      5.8 AST        3.4 REB        1.6 STL
Sr./22.4
Hometown: Aurora, Ontario Canada
NBA Comparison:  Kirk Hinrich/ Ryan Arcidiacono
ROLE: Backup Point Guard
BEST TOOLS: Playmaking/Leadership/IQ

Nembhard has proven to be a winner and was the true point guard on a Gonzaga teams filled with NBA talent. He will be undervalued because he is not an elite athlete or scorer. He is one of the older prospects in the draft. But we may look back in five years and wonder why he wasn’t rated higher.

JD Davison-CG-Alabama

6'3”/192/6'6.5''
8.5 PTS        4.8 REB        4.3 AST
Fr./19.7
Hometown: Latohatchee, AL
NBA Comparison:  Dennis Smith Jr./Willie Warren                                                   ROLE: Backup Guard
BEST TOOLS: Elite Athleticism/Playmaking

Davison is a strong athletic guard that was a top prospect coming into college. He was not the most productive player, but he flashed playmaking skills that can convert to the NBA. He will likely need some time in the G League though.

GETTING DRAFTED BORDERLINE:

Alondes Williams-CG-Wake Forest
6'5''/209/6'7''
18.5 PTS      6.4 REB        5.2 AST
Sr./23.0
Hometown: Milwaukee
NBA Comparison: Kris Dunn/Anthony Parker
BEST TOOLS: Passing/Guard Size/Playmaking

Williams was the ACC Player of the Year in 2022. He was an outstanding all-around college player but his lack of quickness limits his NBA potential.

Jamaree Bouyea-PG-San Francisco
6'2”/170/6'7''
17.3 PTS        5.0 REB        4.0 AST
Sr./23.0
Hometown: San Francisco
NBA Comparison:  Darren Collison
BEST TOOLS:  Versatility/Defense/Length

Iverson Molinar-PG-Mississippi St

6'3”/192/6'6.5''
17.5 PTS        3.1 REB        3.6 AST
Jr./22.6
Hometown: Panama City, Panama
NBA Comparison:  CJ Watson
BEST TOOLS:  Playmaking/Scoring

Colin Gillespie-PG-Villanova
6'3''/196/6'4''
15.6 PTS       3.8 REB         3.2 AST
Sr./23.0
Hometown: Warminster, PA
NBA Comparison:  Nolan Smith
BEST TOOLS:  Leadership/Playmaking/Shooting

Jared Rhoden-SG-Seton Hall
6'6''/201/6'11''
15.5 PTS       6.7 REB         1.2 STL
Sr./22.8
Hometown: Baldwin, NY
NBA Comparison:
Darrun Hilliard
BEST TOOLS:  Defense/Hustle/Length

Hometown: Jesenice, Slovenia
NBA Comparison: Alexey Shved
BEST TOOLS: Passing/Height/Playmaking
