2024 NBA FREE AGENCY RANKINGS

Teams with cap space via Bleacher Report:

 1. Philadelphia 76ers: $58.4 million

 2. Detroit Pistons: $58.2 million

 3. Orlando Magic: $52 million

 4. Utah Jazz: $43.8 million

 5. Oklahoma City Thunder: $37.5 million

 6. San Antonio Spurs: $34.4 million

 7. Charlotte Hornets: $11.4 million

Here is my list by tiers:

Tier 1: Stars that are #1/2 options on playoff teams
All are seeking SUPERMAX, MAX or NEAR MAX Contracts

1. TYRESE MAXEY-PG-PHILADELPHIA 76ERS (RESTRICTED)
6'2''/195
AGE: 23.6
Awards:  1x All Star, 2024 Most Improved Player
STATS: 25.9 PTS    6.2 AST          3.7 REB         37.3%-3PT                86.3%-FT
Market Value:Eligible for a five-year, $204.5 million contract extension which he will likely sign as soon as free agency starts

Maxey had a major breakout season in 2024. He more than filled the void left by James Harden and proved he could be the number one option in Philly when Joel Embiid was injured. He is one of the most exciting young players in the league. If the 76ers add another piece (see next name on the list) and Maxey takes his game to another level, the 76ers could challenge Boston in the East.

2. PAUL GEROGE-SF/SG-
LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS
6'8''/220
AGE: 34.1
Awards: 6x All NBA, 9x All Star, 4x All Defense
STATS: 22.6 PTS    5.2 REB         3.6 AST          41.3%-3PT                90.7%-FT
Market Value: Eligible for Superstar Max Deal with 10+ years of service 35% of the cap but likely to sign for less

George is still one of the best shooters in the NBA and can defend multiple positions even at this point in his career. He is the top player likely to move in free agency this summer. Houston and Orlando have cap space and young rosters to entice him. Philly will make the most sense if he wants a chance at a title though.

3. LEBRON JAMES-PG/CF-
LOS ANGELES LAKERS
6'8''/250
AGE: 39.4
Awards: 4x MVP, 4x FINALS MVP, 20x All NBA, 20x All Star, 6x All Defense
One of the Greatest Players in Basketball History
STATS: 25.7 PTS    8.3 AST          7.3 REB         41.0%-3PT|
Market Value:Eligible for Superstar Max Deal with 10+ years of service 35% of the cap but likely to sign for less

King James is still among the best players in the league despite the fact that he will turn 40 in December. His longevity is now unmatched all time as even Kareem had a drop in production after his age 38 season. Winning another title seams unlikely, but LeBron will continue to add his name to the top of numerous lists in the NBA record book. He is likely to opt out and stay with the Lakers, but how much less will he take in order to attract other veteran players.

Tier 2: High End Starters
All of these players would start on any team. These players are all veterans with at least six years of experience and all have been contributors in the playoffs.

4. DEMAR DEROZAN-SF-CHICAGO BULLS
6'6''/220
AGE: 34.8
Awards: 3x All NBA, 6x All Star
STATS: 24.0 PTS    4.3 REB         5.3 AST
Market Value: Short Term High Value Veteran Contract
Khris Middleton: 3 years/$93.0 (31.0 AAV)
CJ McCollum: 2 years/$64.0 (32.0 AAV)

DeRozan is the mid-range legend and is still one of the best pure shooters in the league. His value as a player is even a huge variance as he was ranked the 14
th best player in the league by Hoopshype and ranked 49th by The Ringer.  DeRozan has been underrated an underappreciated for most of his career. He can get one last big payday but he may take less to chase a ring.

5. JAMES HARDEN-SG-
LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS
6'5''/222
AGE: 34.8
Awards: 2018 NBA MVP, 7x All NBA, 10x All Star, 3x Scoring Champion
STATS: 16.6 PTS    8.5 AST          5.1 REB         38.1%-3PT                87.8%-FT
Market Value: Short Term High Value Veteran Contract
Khris Middleton: 3 years/$93.0 (31.0 AAV)
CJ McCollum: 2 years/$64.0 (32.0 AAV)

Harden has had a better overall career than DeRozan but right now is probably not as valuable to a contender. He still stuffs the stat sheet and can still go on big scoring runs. The Los Angeles native is likely to stay with the Clippers.

6. TOBIAS HARRIS-CF-
PHILADELPHIA 76ERS
6'8''/226
AGE: 31.9
STATS: 17.2 PTS    6.5 REB         3.1 AST          37.3%-3PT                87.8%-FT
Market Value: Scoring Wing Third Option
Khris Middleton: 3 years/$93.0 (31.0 AAV)
Mikal Bridges: 4 years/$90.9 (22.75 AAV)

Harris is a safe player as you know you are getting a legit 3
rd scoring option that shoots at a high percentage. He can space the floor, rebound and play both forward spots. He ranks higher than Klay Thompson based on his durability and versatility.

7. KLAY THOMPSON-SG/SF-GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
6'6''/215
AGE: 34.3
Accolades: 2x All NBA, 5x All Star, 4x NBA Champion, 1x All Defense
STATS: 17.9 PTS    3.3 REB         2.3 AST          38.7%-3PT                92.7%-FT
Market Value: Scoring Wing Third Option
Khris Middleton: 3 years/$93.0 (31.0 AAV)
Mikal Bridges: 4 years/$90.9 (22.75 AAV)

All signs point to the Splash Brothers Era coming to an end for the Warriors. They should do the right thing for Klay and the franchise by facilitating a sign and trade. He is no longer a number two option and is no longer a great defender. He can still shoot the ball and would be a great third option on the Mavericks, Lakers or Clippers. The Thunder could be a dark horse team that has cap space and could use a veteran presence to get them to the next level.

Tier 3: Good Starters
Most of these players would start on any team though some would be better served as 6th/7th men on contenders.

8. KENTAVOUS CALDWELL-POPE-SG/SF-DENVER NUGGETS
6'5''/204
AGE: 31.3
Accolades: 2x NBA Champion
STATS: 10.1 PTS    2.4 REB         2.4 AST          40.6%-3PT                89.4%-FT
Market Value: Prototype 3 and D Wing
Cameron Johnson: 4 years/$94.5 (23.625 AAV)
Malik Monk: 4 years/$77.975 (19.49 AAV)

KCP is the Prototype 3 and D player and has a championship pedigree. He is an excellent shooter and floor spacer. He is the ultimate team player that knows how to play his role. Does he want a bigger role in an offense? A young team could certainly use a player like him to get to the next level.

9. MILES BRIDGES-PF-CHARLOTTE HORNETS
6'7''/230
AGE: 26.2
STATS: 21.0 PTS    7.3 REB         3.3 AST
Market Value: Scorer on a Bad Team
Jerami Grant: 5 years/$160 (32.0 AAV)
Kyle Kuzma: 4 years/$90 (22.5 AAV)

Who knows what to make of Bridges, the Hornets, and how much they can and will pay him? He was their leading scorer but it is clear that Brandon Miller is the future of the franchise. The situation is nearly identical to Grant and Kuzma last year in free agency. Portland drastically overpaid to keep Grant while Washington kept Kuzma on a reasonable deal. Charlotte has the cap space and wants to keep him but they are essentially bidding with themselves as the interest in Bridges by other teams seems very lukewarm.

10. ISAIAH HARTENSTEIN-C-
NEW YORK KNICKS
7'1''/250
AGE: 26.1
STATS: 7.8 PTS      8.3 REB         2.5 AST
Market Value: Young Starting Center
Nic Claxton: 4 years/$100.0 ($25.0 AAV)
Jusuf Nurkic: 4 years/$70.0 ($17.5 AAV)
Supply and Demand is going to get Mr. Hartenstein paid this summer. Young starting centers that can rebound, run the court and move the ball have high value in today’s NBA. The Thunder have cap space and did not draft a big man. He would be an instant starter in OKC where they could play Chet Holmgren at the four.

11. ISAAC OKORO-SG/SF-CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (RESTRICTED)
6'5''/225
AGE: 23.4
STATS: 9.4 PTS      3.0 REB         1.9 AST          39.1%-3PT
Market Value: Young Defensive Wing
Dillon Brooks: 4 years/$86.0 (21.5 AAV)
Luguentz Dort: 5 years/$82.5 (16.5 AAV)

Due to the fact that he is a restricted free agent, a team will need to overpay in order to get Okoro out of Cleveland. Cleveland drafted wing Jaylon Tyson which likely signals that they are ready to move on from Okoro. Okoro is a highly athletic and energetic wing. He can really defend and has improved as a shooter. In my humble opinion he has more value for a young team then a contender.

12. TYUS JONES-PG-WASHINGTON WIZARDS
6'1''/196
AGE: 28.1
STATS: 12.0 PTS    7.3 AST          2.7 REB
Market Value: Starting Point Guard
Lonzo Ball: 4 years/$80.0 ($20.0 AAV)
Collin Sexton: 4 years/$70.95 ($17.74 AAV)

After being one of the top backups in the league in Memphis, Jones proved he could be a full-time starter in Washington. He ranked 9
th in the league in assists per game and led the league in assist to turnover ratio where he averaged only one turnover per game. He proved he is a starter and should now be paid like one.

13. CHRIS PAUL-PG-
GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
6'0''/175
AGE: 39.1
Accolades: 12x All NBA, 11x All Star, 9x All Defense
STATS: 9.2 PTS      6.8 AST          3.9 REB         37.1%-3PT                82.7%-FT
Market Value: Very Uncertain given his age and role

One of the best guards in NBA history was a shell of himself in the failed experiment with Golden State. Will this be his last season in the league? He can still provide minutes and is an ultimate competitor. This will be very interesting.

14. KELLY OUBRE-SF-
PHILADELPHIA 76ERS
6'7''/203
AGE: 28.5
STATS: 15.4 PTS    5.0 REB         1.1 STL
Market Value: Energy/Athlete Starting Wing
Dillon Brooks: 4 years/$86.0 (21.5 AAV)
Keldon Johnson: 4 years/$74.0 (18.5 AAV)

Oubre seems a lot older because he has already played for five teams and has played nine years in the league. He still is young and is still one of the best athletes in the open court. He proved he could be the 4
th option in Philly las season. It seems like a good fit, however if they sign Paul George then Oubre is likely the odd man out.

15. SADDIQ BEY-SF-
ATLANTA HAWKS
6'7''/215
AGE: 25.2
STATS: 13.7 PTS    6.5 REB         1.5 AST          83.7%-FT
Market Value: Energy/Athlete Starting Wing
Norman Powell: 5 years/$90.0 (20.0 AAV)
Josh Green: 3 years/$41.0 ($13.67 AAV)

Bey is similar to Oubre as a versatile wing that is a high energy player. He is a very good rebounder for a wing and can score off the dribble as well. His three-point shooting percentage took a big dip in Atlanta but he was a decent shooter in Detroit and is a good free throw shooter. He is clearly a starter and is only 25 years old, but may have a murky market given the number of solid wings out there.

16. CALEB MARTIN-SF-
MIAMI HEAT
6'5''/205
AGE: 28.8
STATS: 10.0 PTS    4.4 REB         2.2 AST          34.9%-3PT
Market Value: Energy/Athlete Starting Wing
Norman Powell: 5 years/$90.0 (20.0 AAV)
Josh Green: 3 years/$41.0 ($13.67 AAV)

Martin is another high energy, athletic wing that was a key contributor on Miami’s deep playoff runs in 2022 and 2023. This past season he was replaced in the starting lineup but still was a great role player.

17. DERRICK JONES JR-SF-DALLAS MAVERICKS
6'5''/210
AGE: 27.3
STATS: 8.6 PTS      3.3 REB         1.0 AST          34.9%-3PT
Market Value: Energy/Athlete Starting Wing
Norman Powell: 5 years/$90.0 (20.0 AAV)
Josh Green: 3 years/$41.0 ($13.67 AAV)

Just a step below Oubre in skill, but one of the humans on planet earth that are more athletic than Oubre. Jones Jr. showcased his value in Dallas where he started every playoff game in their run to the NBA Finals.

18. SPENCER DINWIDDIE-PG-
LOS ANGELES LAKERS
6'5''/215
AGE: 31.2
STATS: 10.5 PTS    4.7 AST          2.7 REB
Market Value: Versatile Combo Guard/Wing
Caris LeVert: 2 years/$32.0 (16.0 AAV)
Jordan Clarkson: 2 years/$28.378 (14.19 AAV)

Dinwiddie has been a good player that was not a good fit with the Lakers. He can have value on a winning team if they are able to use him a Caris LeVert like role where he can facilitate the offense off the bench.

19. DE'ANTHONY MELTON-PG-
PHILADELPHIA 76ERS
6'2''/200
AGE: 26.1
STATS: 11.1 PTS    3.7 REB         3.0 AST          1.6 STL          36.0%-3PT
Market Value: Borderline Starting Point Guard
Derrick White: 4 years/$70.0 ($17.0 AAV)
Cole Anthony: 3 years/$39.1 ($13.03)

Melton may be the most interesting free agent in this class. His positives: young, proven starter, can score, can defend, can shoot, energy and toughness. Negatives: Injury, height, more of a scorer than passer, might be better as a backup. Melton’s market will be vey interesting. He SHOULD get a contract right around or above the mid-level but it will be interesting to see his value given his back injury.

20. JONAS VALANČIŪNAS-C-NEW ORLEANS PELICANS
7'0''/265
AGE: 32.1
STATS: 12.2 PTS    8.8 REB         2.1 AST
Market Value: Veteran Starting Center
Steven Adams: 2 years/$25.2 ($12.6 AAV)
Al Horford: 2 years/$19.5 ($9.75 AAV)

Supply and Demand the other way, as Jonas will have his market decreased due to his skill set where he doesn’t block shots. He can still score, post up and rebound and is a great veteran presence.

Tier 4: Sharpshooters

Market Value:
Grayson Allen: 4 years/$70.0 (17.5 AAV)
Austin Reaves: 4 years/$53.83 (13.457 AAV)

21. GARY TRENT JR.-SG-TORONTO RAPTORS
6'5''/209
AGE: 25.4
